A 54-year-old woman from Haifa has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a Holocaust survivor’s credit card and using it to make thousands of shekels in fraudulent purchases, Israeli police said.

The investigation began after the victim, a woman in her 90s, reported that she believed she had been defrauded. Police allege the suspect stole the victim’s credit card during a shared ride before later visiting her home under the pretense of conducting medical checks.

Authorities say the suspect allegedly stole additional property from the residence and then used the credit card to make purchases totaling thousands of shekels.

Police tracked down and arrested the suspect, later discovering she had allegedly violated the terms of her electronic monitoring while committing the offenses.

Investigators are expected to ask the Haifa Magistrate’s Court to extend the suspect’s detention as the investigation continues.
