New Jersey officials have begun removing more than 4,500 voter registrations that were improperly created due to a Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) software error affecting approximately 6,600 individuals between June 2023 and June 2024, Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced Tuesday.

Officials said the remaining registrations will undergo additional review by county election officials to ensure eligible voters are not mistakenly removed. The state has also notified affected individuals, launched an information website, and said the investigation into the software error remains ongoing.

According to the governor, preliminary findings indicate that fewer than 400 of those improperly registered cast ballots, and there is no evidence at this time that the error changed the outcome of any election.
