Mayor Zohran Mamdani is urging New Yorkers to prepare for heavy rain and flash flooding expected tonight into Wednesday, as the city activates its emergency response and opens 51 Safe Overnight Locations across the five boroughs, including one in Boro Park.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for New York City, with forecasters predicting 1.5 to 4 inches of rain, while some areas could receive up to 5 inches. Rainfall rates may reach 1 to 2 inches per hour during the heaviest downpours, increasing the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone neighborhoods.

“Keeping New Yorkers safe begins before the storm arrives,” Mayor Mamdani said. “Our City has been preparing across all five boroughs for the storm, and is opening 51 Safe Overnight Locations where people can spend the night out of harm’s way.” He urged residents to make a plan, sign up for emergency alerts, and check on neighbors who may need assistance.

As part of the city’s preparations, emergency crews have been clearing catch basins, inspecting flood-prone neighborhoods, and placing specialized response teams, including downed tree and tow truck units, on standby. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and never drive or walk through flooded streets.

One of the city’s safe overnight locations is located in Boro Park at The Detective WenJian Liu School of Civics and Entrepreneurship, 6312 13th Avenue. The location will remain available while dangerous weather conditions persist.
