Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced overnight Tuesday that it had launched ballistic missiles at a U.S. Air Force base and the headquarters of U.S. Central Command in Jordan.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) later confirmed the Iranian missile launch but said all of the missiles were successfully intercepted.

“U.S. forces remain vigilant and on high alert,” CENTCOM said in an official statement. US defense officials added that the base sustained no damage and no casualties were reported.

A senior White House official described the incident as an attempted surprise attack by Iran on an American base but emphasized that all of the missiles were intercepted successfully. According to the official, U.S. air defense systems were fully prepared and functioned effectively. The official did not say whether the US would respond to the attack.

At the same time as the missile launch, Iranian media reported that Revolutionary Guard naval forces intercepted and stopped three oil tankers attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Iranian reports, the tankers ignored warnings and navigation instructions issued by the Revolutionary Guards, prompting the operation.

Amid the heightened tensions, new details also emerged about an Iranian covert reinforcement effort intended to strengthen Iran’s ground defenses. Thousands of Shiite militia fighters from Iraq have crossed into Iran in recent days as part of preparations for the possibility of a direct ground war with US forces.

A senior militia commander confirmed that the deployment is intended to prepare for a scenario involving direct ground combat with U.S. forces, particularly in the coastal regions and strategic islands of southern Iran, including Khuzestan Province and the Strait of Hormuz.
