Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joked about the possibility of being arrested abroad if his aircraft were forced to make an emergency landing in a country that recognizes the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying Israel has “special forces” that could handle the situation.

During an interview with Fox News, host Sean Hannity asked Netanyahu whether he worries about suffering a medical emergency during an overseas flight that could require landing in a country obligated to enforce the ICC arrest warrant against him.

“Yes, I think about it,” Netanyahu replied. “You know, we have special forces around. I served with them for five years. Let’s give them a new mission,” he said with a smile, referencing his service in the elite Sayeret Matkal unit.

Netanyahu’s remarks come against the backdrop of the ICC arrest warrants issued against him, which have complicated his international travel. During previous trips to the United States, including visits to the United Nations, Israel’s official aircraft, Wing of Zion, reportedly took longer routes to avoid flying over or making emergency landings in countries that could theoretically seek to enforce the warrants.
