Iran considered launching a retaliatory ballistic missile strike against a Ukrainian seaport after Ukraine attacked an Iranian commercial cargo ship in the Caspian Sea, but intensive diplomatic efforts appear to have eased tensions for now, according to a report in The New York Times.

The Ukrainian strike on Saturday killed one civilian sailor and injured another. People briefed on intelligence assessments said Tehran was considering firing a ballistic missile carrying a small warhead, likely targeting one of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. The planned strike was intended to deliver a symbolic response while causing relatively limited damage.

Iranian officials reportedly hoped the confrontation would end following their response, though Western officials warned that Ukraine’s reaction could not be predicted and that an Iranian missile strike could trigger a far wider conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi initially said the attack “cannot go unanswered,” accusing Ukraine of violating the United Nations Charter.

Araghchi later spoke by telephone with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who described the attack on the Iranian vessel as unintentional. Araghchi said Iran was also not seeking escalation but demanded compensation for the losses. He separately discussed efforts to reduce regional tensions with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

The immediate threat of an Iranian strike has receded, though officials said it remained unclear how long the diplomatic calm would hold.
