Early hopes that Saudi Arabia or Qatar could broker a diplomatic breakthrough have faded, leaving both Washington and Tehran preparing for a prolonged confrontation.

Iranian officials reportedly believe they can withstand additional pressure and that the United States will ultimately be unable to force Tehran back to the negotiating table. That calculation has been strengthened by President Trump’s repeated threats of a major escalation without a corresponding expansion of the military campaign.

Tehran is also said to be closely watching the pressures facing Washington, including depleted American munitions and declining global oil reserves.
