
DEFENSE SUCCESS: Rafael Completes Successful SPYDER Air Defense System Test
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems announced Thursday that it has successfully completed a series of tests of its SPYDER air defense system, demonstrating the system’s ability to intercept multiple aerial threats under complex battlefield conditions.
During the trials in Israel, the system successfully intercepted several targets, including low-radar-signature drones, using hit-to-kill technology that destroys incoming threats through direct impact rather than a proximity blast.
Rafael said the upgraded SPYDER system incorporates improvements based on lessons learned during the war in Israel, as well as operational experience gathered from deployments around the world.
SPYDER is a mobile air defense system that uses Rafael’s Python and I-Derby interceptor missiles to defend against a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The system is designed for rapid deployment and flexible operation to protect strategic assets.
The company noted that SPYDER is already in service with several countries, including NATO and European Union members. Romania recently selected the system as part of a major air defense modernization program, following the Czech Republic’s procurement agreement signed in 2020.
Rafael CEO Yoav Tourgeman said the successful test highlights the company’s commitment to developing advanced, combat-proven air defense systems capable of addressing evolving threats on today’s battlefield.
