The man who repeatedly rammed his vehicle into the entrance of 770 Eastern Parkway, the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights, was sentenced Wednesday and is expected to be released next week.

Dan Sohail, 36, pleaded guilty in May to damaging religious property. He has been incarcerated for six months, and Brooklyn federal Judge Eric Vitaliano sentenced him to the time he has already spent in custody and ordered him to pay $19,000 in restitution.

Sohail was initially charged with a hate crime following the January incident, which caused widespread alarm. Investigators later determined that he had contacted Jewish organizations before the attack and was suffering from mental health problems. He told investigators that he had been attempting to connect with his “Jewish heritage.”

Vitaliano said Sohail requires mental health treatment and did not exhibit hatred toward Jews. The judge rejected prosecutors’ request for a harsher sentence, calling the case “a sad tale.”
