Nearly 150 vehicles were impounded during two major toll enforcement operations on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, which connects Rockland and Westchester counties, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday.

The two operations, conducted by New York State Police in partnership with the Thruway Authority, resulted in 149 vehicles being impounded and 583 tickets being issued. Of those tickets, 319 were for license plate violations. 

During the first operation on March 17, troopers impounded 80 vehicles and issued 293 tickets, including 141 for license plate violations. Eighteen of the vehicles were impounded over unpaid Thruway tolls. 

A second operation on May 5 resulted in 69 vehicles being impounded and 290 tickets being issued, including 178 for plate violations. Ten vehicles were impounded over unpaid tolls. 

Troopers focused on vehicles with suspended registrations, including registrations suspended over unpaid tolls or a lack of insurance. Tickets were also issued for fake, altered, obstructed or missing license plates, along with speeding, cellphone use, seatbelt violations and expired licenses or registrations. 

The Hudson Valley operations were part of a broader statewide effort targeting so-called ghost plates, which are missing, altered or obscured license plates used by some motorists in an effort to avoid tolls and traffic enforcement cameras. Across all four statewide operations, 214 vehicles were impounded and 1,155 tickets were issued.
