Most Americans believe the war with Iran has not been worth fighting, while President Donald Trump’s approval rating on his handling of the conflict has declined slightly, according to a new Associated Press-NORC poll.

About two-thirds of U.S. adults said the war has not been worthwhile, including 87% of Democrats, 68% of independents and 37% of Republicans. Trump’s approval rating on Iran stands at 28%, down from 34% last month. Among Republicans, 61% approve of his handling of the conflict, compared with 71% in June.

The survey also found limited support for continuing military action. About two in 10 Americans want the campaign to continue, while roughly three in 10 favor pausing the fighting and seeking renewed ceasefire negotiations. Independents and Democrats are more likely than Republicans to want an immediate end to the military campaign.

Economic concerns remain a major factor. About seven in 10 Americans said it is important to prevent oil and gas prices from rising, while a similar share said reaching a permanent ceasefire is important. Republicans placed particularly high importance on preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, with about eight in 10 calling that goal at least “very” important.

Trump’s overall approval rating stands at 33%, slightly below where he was at the same point in his first term and similar to where former President Joe Biden stood roughly a year and a half into his presidency.
