Ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is being held at a federal detention center right near Boro Park, is scheduled to stand trial in Manhattan on June 1, 2027.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center Brooklyn, commonly known as MDC Brooklyn. The federal jail is located at 80 29th Street in Sunset Park, just west of Boro Park near Third Avenue.

The nearby location means one of the world’s most prominent high profile political prisoners is currently being held only a short distance from Boro Park while awaiting his federal trial date.

A federal judge scheduled the trial during a recent court appearance in Manhattan, where attorneys discussed the timeline of the case and legal arguments expected before proceedings begin.

Federal prosecutors accuse Maduro and his wife of participating in a long-running conspiracy involving drug trafficking into the United States. He also faces narcoterrorism and weapons-related charges.

Maduro and his wife have pleaded not guilty. His attorneys are expected to challenge the case and argue that his former position as Venezuela’s president protects him from prosecution in the United States.

Although the case is being handled in Manhattan federal court, Maduro is expected to remain jailed near Boro Park as his legal team prepares for the closely watched trial.

Unless the schedule changes, the trial is expected to begin on June 1, 2027.
