The United States and Israel are reportedly considering a land blockade of Iran as part of a broader effort to increase economic pressure on the Iranian regime, according to a report by the British Telegraph.

The proposal is said to be one of several options under review by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Under the plan, the U.S. and Israel would seek to persuade Iran’s neighbors and regional partners to tighten or close border crossings, restricting the flow of imports and exports into and out of the country.

According to the report, countries bordering Iran—including Iraq and Pakistan—could be asked to strengthen border controls in an effort to further isolate Tehran economically.

A senior Israeli official quoted by the Telegraph said, “What if you simply block the land? Suppose Iran can’t bring anything in and can’t send anything out.”

The proposal would face significant logistical and political challenges given Iran’s long borders with Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

Retired U.S. Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland told the Telegraph that a land blockade would be “almost impossible” to fully enforce. However, he said limiting Iran’s ability to conduct trade could further isolate the regime economically, while noting that such a strategy would likely require a military component as well.
