Quick action by two Toms River police officers is being credited with saving the life of a 51-year-old man who suffered a medical emergency in Ortley Beach.

According to the Toms River Police Department, officers were dispatched on Tuesday, June 30, after police communications received a report of an unresponsive and non-breathing 51-year-old man at a residence in Ortley Beach.

Patrolman Peter Saker was dispatched to the scene, while SLEO-II Frank Palino, who was working a special duty assignment nearby, heard the call over the radio and immediately responded.

The two officers arrived together less than two minutes after the initial dispatch and confirmed the man was pulseless and not breathing. They immediately began lifesaving measures, performing CPR and delivering two shocks with an automated external defibrillator (AED).

When the Med-5 CSO crew arrived, Patrolman Saker and Officer Palino continued assisting by providing high-quality CPR and administering additional AED shocks.

Officials said the man’s condition improved dramatically as a result of the coordinated lifesaving efforts. He was transported to Community Medical Center, where he was reportedly expected to make a full recovery.
