An Iranian state-linked media outlet has offered a rare explanation for why no audio recordings of Iran’s new Supreme Leader have been released, arguing that modern intelligence agencies can extract extensive information from even a short voice recording.

According to Hamshahri, a newspaper affiliated with the Tehran municipality, every audio file contains hidden layers of data that can reveal the speaker’s physical characteristics, geographic location, recording time, equipment used, and even aspects of the speaker’s biological condition.

The report outlined five key methods intelligence agencies could allegedly use to analyze recordings. These include studying a room’s unique acoustic signature to estimate its size and construction materials, examining electrical grid frequency fluctuations to determine where and when the recording was made, identifying the recording device through its unique audio fingerprint, and analyzing background noises such as ventilation systems, traffic, aircraft, insects, or birds to narrow down the location.

The article also highlighted what it described as “acoustic biometrics,” claiming that voice resonance, breathing patterns, speech pauses, and other vocal characteristics could reveal a speaker’s physical features, stress level, heart rate, and overall condition. It further asserted that voice-altering software can often be reversed by advanced analysis.

The report suggests Iranian officials are concerned that even carefully edited audio messages could provide foreign intelligence agencies with valuable information about the Supreme Leader’s location, health, or security arrangements.
