Iran is seeking to raise the economic and political cost of the conflict for Washington by targeting pressure points across Middle Eastern trade routes, shipping lanes and energy infrastructure, according to Reuters.

Rather than pursuing a decisive military victory, Tehran is carrying out what Gulf officials and analysts describe as a strategy of calibrated escalation intended to inflict mounting costs without triggering a full-scale war.

Iran’s objective is to convince the United States and its allies that containing the crisis will ultimately prove more costly than accommodating Tehran’s demands. By applying pressure across maritime chokepoints and regional energy assets, Iran believes it can strengthen its position in any future negotiations.

The strategy extends beyond the Strait of Hormuz. Threats involving the Red Sea and Saudi energy infrastructure indicate an effort to widen the economic impact, disrupt global commerce and test how much pressure Washington and its regional partners are prepared to absorb.

Sources familiar with Tehran’s thinking said Iranian leaders believe President Trump is seeking negotiating leverage rather than a prolonged war and may eventually agree to concessions under sustained pressure. Iran also believes its geography, regional allies and ability to threaten shipping give it advantages in a drawn-out confrontation.

The conflict is increasingly becoming a contest of endurance. U.S.-led maritime efforts are focused largely on protecting shipping and keeping commercial routes open, while Iran continues using regional pressure to raise the cost of the confrontation.
