As blood supplies remain critically low across New Jersey and the nation, Lakewood will host the second annual Gary Letizia Memorial Blood Drive on Monday, August 10, with organizers encouraging residents to donate and help meet urgent lifesaving medical needs.

The blood drive comes as the American Red Cross has declared a national blood shortage emergency for only the second time in its history, while New Jersey has experienced a significant decline in blood donations due to severe weather and other factors. The statewide initiative was founded by Dr. Matt Letizia, medical director for Lakewood EMS and Lakewood First Aid (LFA), in memory of his late father, Gary Letizia, who relied heavily on blood donations during his final year of life.

Last year’s inaugural event was recognized by New Jersey Blood Services as the state’s most successful blood drive of 2025, collecting approximately 2,000 pints of blood in Lakewood alone. Since each pint can help save up to three lives, organizers hope to match or exceed that achievement this year.

The 2026 blood drive will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lakewood EMS Headquarters, 1555 Pine Street, under the auspices of Lakewood EMS and Lakewood First Aid. Healthy individuals 18 years of age and older are encouraged to donate, with all blood types urgently needed.
