Antisemitic hate crimes continue to account for the overwhelming majority of bias incidents in New York City, with new NYPD statistics showing that Jews were the victims in more than half of all reported hate crimes this year.

According to figures released by the NYPD, 360 hate crimes have been recorded in the city since the beginning of the year, up from 329 during the same period last year—a 9.4% increase.

Of those incidents, 205, or 56.9%, targeted Jews, despite the Jewish community making up approximately 10% of New York City’s population.

The rise in antisemitic incidents comes even as the city’s seven major crime categories—including murder, shootings, robbery, burglary, grand larceny, and felony assault—have all declined.

The statistics were released amid growing criticism of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani from Jewish leaders and organizations, who argue that he has failed to confront antisemitism forcefully enough.

Critics have pointed to Mamdani’s repeated accusations that Israel is committing “genocide” in its war against Hamas, his calls for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, and his refusal to condemn the slogan “globalize the intifada.”

“The public is influenced by the mayor’s messaging. He creates fear within the Jewish community,” said Dov Hikind, founder of Americans Against Antisemitism and a former New York State Assemblyman.

Mamdani has rejected the criticism, insisting that “there is no room for intolerance in New York.” He also noted that his administration increased funding for the Mayor’s Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes by 800%, adding $26 million to its budget.
