U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the American military remains at an unprecedented level of readiness despite President Donald Trump’s decision to postpone planned strikes against Iran.

“The Department of Defense was prepared and ready, and remains ready, at levels not seen since World War II,” Hegseth said. “We are ready and prepared right now as well.”

His remarks come after Trump halted a planned military operation against Iran over the weekend following days of speculation that the United States was on the verge of launching a major strike.

Although the operation was called off, Hegseth stressed that U.S. forces remain on high alert and are prepared to respond immediately should circumstances change.

Trump has indicated that his preference remains a diplomatic resolution, saying negotiations with Iran are continuing.

“We are talking to them. It will save many lives,” Trump said, adding that he believes understandings regarding the Strait of Hormuz are taking shape and that an eventual agreement to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program can be reached.

The comments come as the United States maintains a significant military presence in the region while diplomatic efforts continue alongside preparations for possible military action.
