LAWRENCE, N.Y. — A popular kosher pizzeria in Lawrence was forced to close after an early morning fire heavily damaged the restaurant and several neighboring businesses on Tuesday.

Fire crews were dispatched at about 3:33 a.m. to a commercial building on Central Avenue near Rockaway Turnpike. The blaze escalated to a second alarm after flames spread beyond the initial storefront.

Roughly 150 firefighters from multiple Nassau County departments responded, along with fire marshal personnel and specialized drone teams. The fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes, and no injuries were reported.

Jerusalem II Pizza sustained extensive damage and will remain closed while repairs are made. Nearby businesses were also affected, including a thrift store that suffered significant smoke and water damage, leaving much of its inventory unsalvageable.

Officials have not determined the cause of the fire. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene, although early indications suggest the blaze may have been linked to an electrical malfunction involving refrigeration equipment. Authorities have not confirmed a cause.

In a statement, Bonnie Sperry, executive director of the National Council of Jewish Women Peninsula Section, thanked the firefighters, police officers and emergency medical personnel who responded, saying their efforts helped prevent even greater damage to surrounding properties.

The organization also announced that its thrift shop on Central Avenue will remain closed because of smoke damage and is temporarily unable to accept donations while cleanup efforts continue.
