A TikTok video is making the rounds in which Jewish youngsters are asked to name their favorite foods. As soon as they do so, a buzzer sounds to indicate that they’re wrong: The food they just named is not Jewish. Then the origin of the food flashes onto the screen.

For example, bagel appears three times in the video. Twice, its origin is given as New York, and once it’s given as Poland. This is as ignorant as it’s stupid. First, bagels did not originate in New York. Second, they originated in the 17th-century Jewish community in Poland. The person who made this video is confusing location with ethnicity.

Some of the examples are downright funny. Chicken matzo ball soup isn’t Jewish; it’s Lithuanian. Best yet, matzo isn’t Jewish; it’s Egyptian.

Hen Mazzig, the Jewish advocate and social media personality who posted this video, wrote that the video isn’t only false, but it’s also malicious.

“This might seem like harmless stupidity, but this video is working to strip Jews of their humanity,” he wrote.

“All people have foods, except Jews, of course,” he added. “It’s malicious and untrue. Just look at the first food, bagels. Invented by Jews in Poland who were legally forbidden from baking bread, so they had to boil it.”

“New York, the state, didn’t invent bagels. Jews did,” he explained.

But the video is so ridiculous, some people find it hard to believe it isn’t meant to be tongue-in-cheek, especially when you consider that the video declares Egypt to be the origin of matzo.
