BRONX, N.Y. (VINnews) — A high-ranking Mount Vernon police official was fired Tuesday after being arrested and charged with attempted murder and conspiracy for allegedly helping her son flee the scene of a Bronx shooting, authorities said.

Jennifer Lackard, 49, who served as deputy police commissioner, was taken into custody at her Bronx home along with her son, Chase Lackard, 20. Prosecutors allege she drove the getaway vehicle after her son allegedly opened fire on a group of people outside Bronx Criminal Court on June 29.

Police said no one was injured in the shooting. Investigators later identified Chase Lackard as the suspected gunman and Jennifer Lackard as the driver who allegedly helped him leave the scene.

Chase Lackard was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy and criminal possession of a firearm. Jennifer Lackard faces charges of attempted murder and conspiracy.

The City of Mount Vernon announced that Jennifer Lackard’s employment was terminated effective immediately. City officials said the allegations are unrelated to her official duties with the police department.

Court records show Chase Lackard previously faced weapons-related charges in New York City, including a 2024 incident in which police shot and wounded him after authorities said he pointed a loaded firearm at officers. Jennifer Lackard had no prior criminal history, according to authorities.

The investigation is being handled by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office and the New York City Police Department.
