CASH FOR GUNS: Peace Council Weighs Thousands of Dollars for Gaza Disarmament
The Peace Council is developing a plan under which Gaza residents who surrender their weapons and commit to abandoning terrorism would receive financial payments, Kan News reported Tuesday.
Under the proposal, which is still being formulated, a weapons buyback policy would be offered to those prepared to lay down their arms, renounce violence and submit to future monitoring.
Officials estimate that surrendering a weapon could result in a payment of thousands of dollars, along with inclusion in a rehabilitation program that is also being developed.
President Donald Trump’s 20-point framework, as well as the 15-point document agreed upon with Hamas, addresses the possession of weapons in accordance with Palestinian law. Under that law, all weapons, including handguns, must be licensed.
The program is intended primarily to collect Kalashnikov rifles. The Peace Council expects international financial support for the project, particularly from Gulf countries.
