Israel’s Health Ministry has confirmed the country’s first death from West Nile virus this year after a man in his 70s died from complications related to the mosquito-borne disease. Since the start of the season, 10 people have been diagnosed with the virus, with three patients still hospitalized in good condition.

Health officials said most patients experienced symptoms including fever, rash, and changes in mental status. Epidemiological investigations are underway to determine where those infected were exposed to mosquitoes carrying the virus.

At the same time, mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus have been detected in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Tayibe, Tira, Kalansawe, and the Lev HaSharon Regional Council. The Environmental Protection Ministry has instructed local authorities to expand mosquito control, surveillance, and pesticide spraying in affected areas.

The Health Ministry urged the public to eliminate standing water, use mosquito repellent, install window screens, wear long sleeves during peak mosquito hours, and report mosquito breeding sites to local authorities.

Officials noted that most West Nile virus infections are mild or symptom-free, but severe complications—including inflammation of the brain or its lining—can occur, particularly among adults over 60 and those with underlying health conditions.
