Two Israelis who accidentally entered Jenin were pelted with stones and bricks but managed to get away and meet up with IDF forces on the other side of the Gilboa crossing Thursday. They were unharmed.

The pair were rerouted into Jenin by Waze while stuck in heavy traffic. The IDF said that “troops were dispatched to detain wanted [Palestinians] in the Jenin area” following the incident.

Others who have gotten lost over the years were not so lucky. In a particularly horrific incident in October 2000, Israeli army reservists Vadim Nurzhitz and Yossi Avrahami took a wrong turn into Ramallah. They were detained by police and brought to a police station for their own protection, but a mob stormed the police station, brutally beat and stabbed them to death and dragged their bodies through the streets. A famous photograph depicts an Arab holding up his bloody hands outside a window to show the crowds that were cheering below. His name was Aziz Salha.

Those who were involved were arrested, but many, including Salha, were subsequently released as part of the 2011 Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange deal. Salha was eventually killed by the IDF in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.

In 2018, a pair of soldiers accidentally drove into Jenin. The pair, a man and a woman from a non-combatant support unit, were surrounded as their vehicle was pelted with rocks and chairs. Palestinian Authority security forces protected the bloodied soldiers from further harm and managed to evacuate them from the area.
