New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended a pro-police celebration in Staten Island Thursday evening, but he was booed so loudly he couldn’t manage to speak for more than one minute before he was hustled off the stage by security.

The NYPD’s National Night Out Against Crime event was well attended, with about 3,500 attendees. But the crowd erupted into boos and jeers when Mamdani took the stage, forcing him to cut his speech short, which he did, smiling throughout, though the smile appeared forced and pained.

“Happy Night Out Against Crime. It’s amazing to be here for the Staten Island community,” Mamdani managed to get out, finishing with “God bless everyone. Thank you.”

Staten Island artist and activist Scott LoBaido attended the event, saying he hoped to question the mayor after his remarks. The activist, who attended the Gracie Mansion Rally and spoke there, started making his way to the podium but was stopped by security personnel. He collapsed shortly thereafter from cardiac arrest.

First responders administered CPR and gave him oxygen before taking him to the hospital, where he later posted to Facebook, indicating that he is recovering.

The National Night Out Against Crime was held at about 70 locations across the city. The initiative is meant to foster good relations between the community and the police force with family-friendly events featuring food, games and activities.

Staten Island voted overwhelmingly against Mamdani, which explains the reaction of the crowd.

Jessica Tisch, the NYPD commissioner, attended the Staten Island event and thanked the officers for their work.
