Mossad Director Roman Gofman has decided to remove two senior officials who were involved in planning an operation aimed at toppling Iran’s regime, N12 reported Thursday.

The officials are the head of the Mossad’s Intelligence Directorate, who entered the position only last December, and the head of the agency’s Iran Division. Security officials said there had been a lack of chemistry between the two and Gofman from the outset, adding that both tenures were ending by mutual agreement and that they could remain in the organization in other roles as part of a broader restructuring.

The two officials were responsible for developing and formally drafting the plan to replace Iran’s government. According to the report, Gofman believes they must bear responsibility for the plan’s failure after it was presented to President Trump but was not implemented on the ground.

The operation was intended to bring down the Iranian regime with the assistance of minority groups and ultimately install different Iranian leaders. The report said that, at best, the plan was never carried out, and at worst, it failed badly.

Israel and the United States reportedly worked together on the secret Mossad-CIA plan, which called for a ground incursion by Kurdish forces backed by extensive Israeli and American air support.

The New York Times reported a while ago that the United States and Israel entered the war with a specific candidate in mind to lead Iran: former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

According to that report, the operation began unraveling on the first day of the war. The Israeli Air Force struck Ahmadinejad’s home in Tehran in an attempt to kill the guards holding him under house arrest and secure his release. Ahmadinejad survived but was injured, after which he reportedly began expressing doubts about the regime-change plan.
