A major internal dispute has reportedly erupted within the Mossad after Director Roman Gofman removed two of the agency’s most senior officials who were responsible for developing Israel’s plan to topple the Iranian regime.

According to reports in the Israeli media, the dismissed officials are the head of the Mossad’s Intelligence Directorate, who assumed the role only last December, and the head of the Iran Division.

Unnamed Mossad sources sharply criticized Gofman, accusing him of attempting to shift responsibility for the failure of the Iran strategy away from himself and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

“While everyone was focused elsewhere, Gofman quietly crafted a plan to absolve himself and the prime minister of responsibility by dismissing two outstanding professionals who devoted their lives to Israel’s security,” the sources were quoted as saying.

The officials questioned who should have been responsible for persuading President Donald Trump to back the plan and who should have prevented Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from influencing Trump against it, arguing that those responsibilities rested with Israel’s political and intelligence leadership rather than the department heads.

According to the sources, employees throughout the Mossad are “in shock,” particularly over the removal of the female intelligence chief, who reportedly rose through the ranks from junior positions to one of the agency’s highest posts.

They described her as “an inspiration to hundreds of employees, especially the women of the organization,” adding that “she thwarted more terrorist attacks against Jews and Israelis than anyone else in the Mossad.”

The sources also accused Gofman of demanding complete loyalty, saying, “Gofman wants everyone to fall in line with his views. That’s not the DNA of the Mossad. After only two months, he already thinks he knows everyone? It appears he arrived with a note from Netanyahu: ‘You serve me. Distance the Iran failure from me and place the blame on the department heads.'”

Security officials, however, pushed back on that narrative, saying there had been a lack of chemistry between Gofman and the two officials from the outset. They stressed that both departures were agreed upon and that the officials may remain within the Mossad in different positions as part of a broader organizational restructuring.

The two officials were reportedly among the architects of the plan presented to President Trump for regime change in Iran—a plan that ultimately was never implemented.
