The findings of a nationwide study on campus antisemitism in Canada in 2025 are shocking and sobering. Nearly all Jewish college students, 96 percent, experienced antisemitism on campus in 2025, both from fellow students and from faculty members.

About experiencing antisemitism in general, the study presented the following statistics:

• 96 percent of students directly experienced or witnessed antisemitism.
• 84 percent said antisemitism is a serious problem on campus.
• 70 percent said the administration doesn’t take the problem seriously.
• 68 percent said their campus is not safe or inclusive for Jews.

The study also noted that large percentages of students experienced violent acts and were changing their behavior accordingly.

• More than 20 percent experienced or witnessed anti-Jewish violence on campus.
• 54 percent reported experiencing intimidation or threats.
• 71 percent reported vandalism.
• 72 percent said they self-censure in class.
• 57 percent said they avoid wearing Jewish symbols.
• 25 percent made the decision to leave the university.
• 40 percent reported suffering academically as a result of antisemitism.

Students described the types of anti-Jewish behavior they encountered. Some said they were chased for wearing a kippah, were spat on for wearing a Star of David, were ostracized by classmates who found out they were Jewish, encountered swastikas and other anti-Jewish graffiti on campus, were called “Zionist” as a slur, were pressured to denounce Israel, or were excluded from Jewish groups and academic projects because of their Jewish identity.

Campus antisemitism reflects the general atmosphere in Canada more broadly. The 400,000-member Jewish community in Canada, while the fourth largest in the world, makes up only 1 percent of the population. Yet in 2024, 68 percent of hate crimes targeted Jewish people.

The Canadian Jewish community has been rocked by violent anti-Jewish incidents since the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, such as a deadly shooting in Montreal in June.
