The Tri-State area is facing a multi-hazard weather threat as intense heat and high humidity fuel severe weather across New York City and the surrounding region.
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 9:00 PM, warning that developing storms could bring damaging wind gusts exceeding 65 mph and large hail.
Because these storms are slow-moving, flash flooding is also a significant concern, with inland New Jersey and Upstate New York at the highest risk.
The severe weather threat will unfold in two main phases. Areas north and west of New York City should expect the initial round of storms between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, after which the system will push east into the city and neighboring communities between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
These severe storms are arriving in the middle of an extended stretch of dangerous summer conditions for Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, and NYC.
A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8:00 PM as heat indices approach 95 degrees, and an Air Quality Alert runs through 11:00 PM due to high ozone levels created by the combined heat and humidity.
