A Florida man accused of hurling a brick through the window of a Chabad synagogue told investigators that anti-Israel material on social media had fueled his anger, with police pointing to a video from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani among the content he had shared.

According to a Sarasota Police probable cause affidavit, 30-year-old Brayton Laschinger admitted deliberately targeting the Chabad House in Sarasota on July 29 because it was a Jewish house of worship.

Police say Laschinger described himself as anti-Israel and told detectives that social-media “propaganda” had been making him increasingly angry. Shortly before the alleged attack, his Instagram account had reposted a video in which Mamdani called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal” and accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

Surveillance footage allegedly shows a barefoot man approaching the synagogue around 6 a.m. with a towel covering his face before throwing a brick through a window and fleeing. Laschinger’s roommate later identified him to investigators, according to police.

Laschinger has been charged with felony criminal mischief against a religious building as a hate crime. He posted $2,500 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on August 28.

The case comes amid growing concern over antisemitism in the United States and renewed debate over whether increasingly inflammatory political rhetoric surrounding Israel can have dangerous real-world consequences.
