A 20-year-old New York City woman was killed and an infant was injured after both were ejected from a vehicle during a crash Friday afternoon on the Garden State Parkway in Ocean County.
According to New Jersey State Police, the crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on August 7 near milepost 75.8 on the northbound Garden State Parkway in Lacey Township.
Police said 26-year-old Johan Mendez, of New York City, was driving a Toyota sedan northbound when the vehicle left the roadway, hit a guardrail, returned to the travel lanes and collided with a Hyundai sedan.
The impact caused 20-year-old Iisiz Lopez, who was seated in the rear of the Toyota, and an infant to be ejected from the vehicle.
Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene. The infant suffered minor injuries, according to police.
Mendez and two other passengers in the Toyota also suffered minor injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the Hyundai sustained minor injuries as well.
The crash forced the closure of the Parkway’s northbound lanes in the area for nearly three hours, with the roadway reopening shortly before 6 p.m.
New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
