INVESTIGATIONS PLANNED: Democrats Prepare Sweeping Trump Probes If They Win House

Aug 9, 2026·2 min read

House Democrats are preparing a broad slate of investigations into President Donald Trump and his administration if they win control of the chamber in November, Reuters reports.

Senior Democrats and committee aides have discussed using hearings, subpoenas and document requests to obtain records from companies tied to Trump’s political and business orbit, as well as from the administration. The focus would include government decision-making, federal contracts, regulatory treatment and whether Trump used presidential power to benefit himself, allies or donors.

One senior Democratic aide said the effort is not being designed around impeachment. “We’re not going into this to impeach,” the aide said. “No one wants a failed vote on day one.” Instead, Democrats are focused on building a body of evidence through investigations that could hold Trump accountable.

Potential areas of scrutiny include Department of Homeland Security contracts, financing for Trump’s planned White House ballroom, corporate donors, alleged pay-to-play arrangements, and a Trump-linked financial vehicle that includes 1789 Capital, where Donald Trump Jr. is a partner. Democrats are also examining dealings involving major companies and contractors, though no final target list has been established.

Democrats have already begun laying the groundwork while still in the minority, sending letters to companies and organizations connected to potential investigations and requesting records that could later be sought by subpoena if they gain control of the House.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in June that Democrats have not ruled out impeachment if they win back the House, but lawmakers involved in the planning say it would remain an option only if investigations uncover evidence they believe meets the threshold for impeachment.
