New York State Police carried out another major enforcement operation on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge this week, targeting drivers using altered, obscured or missing license plates to avoid tolls and traffic cameras.

The crackdown, conducted by State Police Troop T on the New York State Thruway, resulted in a total of 303 tickets. The violations went well beyond ghost plates, with troopers also citing drivers for speeding, cellphone use, seatbelt violations, operating without a license and violations of the Move Over Law.

A total of 28 vehicles were impounded during the operation because of unpaid tolls, underscoring the state’s continued push against drivers attempting to bypass toll enforcement.

Commercial vehicles were also included in the detail, with the Troop T Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit carrying out 33 inspections. More than half a dozen vehicles were immediately placed out of service after inspectors found safety-related violations.

Authorities also issued 118 additional commercial vehicle violations that did not require the vehicles to be taken out of service, including equipment, permit and registration violations.

State Police have been stepping up ghost plate enforcement across the Thruway system as authorities continue cracking down on vehicles whose plates are intentionally covered, altered or otherwise made difficult for cameras to read.

This week’s operation on the Cuomo Bridge marks another sizable enforcement sweep in the region, with hundreds of violations uncovered in a single detail and dozens of vehicles removed from the road.
