U.S. law enforcement authorities reportedly thwarted multiple credible threats targeting soccer superstar Lionel Messi during the 2026 World Cup, including alleged plots involving explosives and assault rifles.

According to a Spanish media report citing leaked classified documents from an FBI joint investigation file, authorities confronted several serious threats against prominent players during the tournament, with Argentina captain Messi among the primary targets.

One of the most serious incidents reportedly occurred ahead of Argentina’s match against Jordan in Dallas. Authorities received an anonymous warning call claiming that three individuals were traveling toward the stadium armed with improvised explosive devices and AR-15-style rifles.

The caller allegedly threatened to attack police officers and players from both teams while specifically identifying Messi as the primary target.

Another major security scare occurred surrounding Argentina’s match against Egypt in Atlanta.

According to the report, an individual posted a threat on X claiming he intended to enter the stadium as a suicide bomber carrying four explosive devices and assassinate Messi.

Police also received an anonymous call claiming that three explosive devices had been planted inside trash cans around the stadium. Additional security personnel and canine units were deployed to conduct extensive searches of the complex.

The reported threats were not limited to Messi.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was also reportedly targeted by credible threats during the tournament. Authorities arrested a suspect on June 16 at the Houston hotel where Portugal’s national team was staying.

French referee François Letexier was also subjected to an extraordinary wave of threats, reportedly receiving more than 6,000 death threats through his personal WhatsApp account during the tournament.

The incidents highlight the massive security operation surrounding the 2026 World Cup and the challenges facing U.S. authorities tasked with protecting some of the world’s most recognizable athletes amid threats against players, officials and tournament venues.
