WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 10, 2026) —  A major staffing transition within the presidential administration was officially announced as Will Scharf, an Orthodox Jewish attorney and former federal prosecutor, has been named to take over as Assistant to the President and White House Counsel. The high-level appointment is scheduled to become effective on September 1.

Scharf will be stepping into the position following the departure of David Warrington, who is transitioning out of public service to pursue opportunities in the private sector. Warrington previously managed executive legal operations as White House Counsel after holding key legal roles during the presidential campaign.

Prior to this appointment, Scharf served as White House Staff Secretary and held the position of Chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission. His legal career includes extensive litigation experience representing high-profile cases before various appellate bodies, including the United States Supreme Court. Additionally, he previously served as a federal prosecutor, worked in private practice, and clerked for two federal appeals court judges.

An alumnus of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Scharf’s legal background and community roots have been highlighted as central to his advancement into senior government affairs. As White House Counsel, he will oversee administrative legal policy, executive branch oversight, and legal advisory operations for the administration starting next month.
