A 43-year-old Whiting man was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries after being hit by a vehicle Sunday night in Manchester Township.

Manchester Township Police said officers responded at approximately 9:37 p.m. to the intersection of County Route 530 and Swift Circle in the Whiting section for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Police said a 2013 Toyota Camry was traveling westbound on County Route 530 when the pedestrian entered the roadway in front of the vehicle and was hit within the intersection. The impact propelled the pedestrian approximately 50 feet to a grassy area near the northwest corner of the intersection.

The pedestrian, identified as 43-year-old Richard J. Fescharek of Whiting, suffered multiple potentially life-threatening injuries and was flown by Life Flight Medevac helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

The Toyota was driven by 63-year-old Rocco Lanzetti of Wrightstown, who was not injured.

Manchester EMS, Robert Wood Johnson Paramedics, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Accurate Towing assisted at the scene. The roadway was partially closed for several hours while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing, with improper pedestrian crossing currently believed to be a contributing factor. The crash is being investigated by Patrolman Anthony DeBlasio of the Manchester Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
