An urgent search is underway in Vienna for an Israeli mother and daughter who disappeared after being seen in the Austrian capital last week.

Mali Yahalomi, 50, and her daughter Liel Yahalomi, 23, have not been heard from since Friday, when they were reportedly last seen near Vienna’s busy Naschmarkt. Israeli officials say contact with both women has since been lost, prompting the Israeli Embassy in Austria to issue an unusual public appeal for information.

The embassy circulated photographs of Mali and Liel and described the effort to locate them as an urgent family and official matter. Authorities are asking anyone who saw the women, encountered them around the Naschmarkt area or has information about their current location to immediately contact police or Israeli officials. The embassy said information provided will be kept confidential.

The Naschmarkt is one of Vienna’s best-known and busiest public markets, with roughly 130 stalls and numerous restaurants drawing locals and tourists throughout the day. The women’s reported last sighting there means investigators and search teams potentially have a large number of witnesses and businesses with surveillance cameras to work through.

According to Israeli reports, the Foreign Ministry and embassy are working with Austrian authorities as the search expands. The civilian organization Chaverim Mechaltzim has also circulated an emergency notice in English and German seeking witnesses who were in the Naschmarkt area when the pair disappeared.

No explanation has been given for their disappearance, and authorities have not publicly indicated that a specific crime is suspected.
