Health Officials Suspect Ebola in Israeli Returning From DR Congo
BEERSHEBA (VINnews)— An Israeli man who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo is isolated at Soroka Medical Center under suspicion of Ebola after developing a fever, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.
The man sought medical treatment days after his return and was placed in isolation while undergoing testing. Results are expected within 24 hours, according to the ministry, which stressed that Ebola remains only a suspicion at this stage.
An epidemiological investigation is underway.
The Health Ministry reiterated warnings against nonessential travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, particularly areas with active infections. Travelers who must visit those countries are advised to consult a travel clinic beforehand.
Anyone returning from either country who develops a fever or other unusual symptoms within 21 days of return must stay home, avoid contact with others, and contact the Health Ministry hotline at *5400, noting the country of travel.
There has never been a confirmed case of Ebola in Israel. Two suspected cases reported in June tested negative.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing an ongoing Ebola outbreak. As of Aug. 7, the World Health Organization reported 4,209 confirmed cases and 1,916 deaths since the outbreak was declared in mid-May. Uganda has recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths.
The ministry said Israel’s health system prepared in advance for the possibility of cases arriving from the affected regions.
