In a case of real life imitating James Bond, President Donald Trump was whisked off Air Force One and flown on a secret flight to Britain from the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, last month after a credible Iranian assassination threat was detected, U.S. officials said Monday.

The president, who had flown to Turkey on Qatar’s gift of a new presidential jet, said he would fly back on an older Air Force One “for old time’s sake.” He boarded the plane on July 8 in full view of photographers. Then a catering container was raised to the other side of the airplane, and he slipped out through an exit on that side and was taken to a military jet, a C-32A. The journalists aboard Air Force One were not aware that he had been whisked away and were told to lower their window shades at the request of the Secret Service, inadvertently serving as decoys.

After Trump landed at an airbase in Britain, he switched back to Air Force One and disembarked in full view of reporters, as if he had been aboard all along. He then crossed the tarmac and boarded the plane gifted to him by Qatar, which flew him back to Washington.

While at the NATO summit, Trump had told reporters that he was Iran’s “number one target.”
