Brendan Dowling was officially sworn in Tuesday morning as a lieutenant with the Spring Valley Police Department, formally taking on his new rank following more than 20 years of service with the department.

The swearing-in came one week after the Spring Valley Village Board of Trustees approved Dowling’s promotion from sergeant to lieutenant as part of a leadership transition within the department.

Dowling has spent more than two decades serving with the Spring Valley Police Department, rising through the ranks before serving as a sergeant and now moving into the department’s command staff as a lieutenant.

He fills the lieutenant position previously held by John “Jack” Bosworth, who recently retired after 36 years in law enforcement, including 32 years with the Spring Valley Police Department. Bosworth additionally served as the department’s deputy chief, with Lieutenant Dowling now taking over the lieutenant position while the deputy chief position remains vacant.

Deputy Mayor Sruly Eisenbach said in a statement to Rockland Daily. “Lieutenant Dowling has tremendous respect among the officers in the department, and I am confident he will be a great lieutenant. We hope he will follow in the footsteps of Deputy Chief Bosworth, whose lieutenant position he is now filling, by continuing to build strong connections and friendships with community organizations and community leaders.”

Spring Valley Police Chief Chief Richard Oleszczuk said, “While having multiple viable candidates certainly makes the selection process challenging, I know that Lt. Dowling will be a great asset to our Spring Valley community and officers alike.”

A fellow officer and official from the police union told Rockland Daily, “Lieutenant Dowling is a fantastic decision for the police department and union, he is one of the best cops and people you’ll ever meet.”

With Tuesday’s swearing-in, Dowling officially begins his new role as lieutenant, continuing his more than 20 years of service to the Spring Valley community in a new leadership position.
