At the Ends of the Earth: Mehadrin Honey and the “Land of Memory” Initiative in the Jewish Autonomy

In the Russian Far East, approximately 7,000 kilometers from the capital city of Moscow, lies the Birobidzhan region. This vast area, located near the Chinese border, was established about ninety years ago as a “Jewish Autonomy,” yet authentic Judaism only began to flourish there in recent decades. Today, thanks to the dedication of the shluchim of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, this artificial vision has transformed into a vibrant, living Jewish reality. The active community, situated in a strategic location, is making the spiritual wasteland bloom and cultivating a fascinating mosaic of a complete Jewish life—from the meticulous observance of halacha, through Torah growth, to deep community involvement in the residents’ lives ahead of the New Year.

This awakening reached its peak last year when the community was privileged to welcome its very own Torah scroll to the local synagogue for the first time. The shliach and Mara D’Asra, Rabbi Ephraim Kolpak, who navigates the community’s activities with great success, led the historic event where the city’s Jews marched through streets adorned with Yiddish signs. This spiritual momentum, developing with the encouragement and guidance of the Chief Rabbi of Russia, the Gaon Rabbi Berel Lazar, shlita, establishes a solid foundation of Jewish identity and connects the Jews of the region to their roots.

The deep connection to tradition does not stop within the walls of the synagogue; it permeates the holiday tables of the community’s families as well. As part of the preparations for a good and sweet new year, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Marzel, rabbi of the Kashrut Authority of the Chief Rabbinate of Russia (founded by the Chief Rabbi of Russia), visited the city of Obluchye in the region. He came to closely supervise the production of pure, high-quality honey, which benefits from the area’s unique climate compared to general honey production in Russia. The meticulous supervision, adhering to the highest standards, is designed to ensure strictly kosher (mehadrin) produce for Rosh Hashanah and even for Pesach, symbolizing the personalized care given to the needs of every local Jew.

Alongside the flourishing Jewish life and the preparations for the month of Tishrei, the community serves as a beacon of chessed and support in times of both routine and crisis. Evidence of its close relationship with the authorities and local society was recently seen with the agreement to establish a unique memorial complex as part of the federal “Land of Memory” project. Prior to this, during a working meeting held by the region’s governor, Ms. Kostiuk, it was agreed that the complex would preserve soil from battlefields in memory of the holy fallen, Hy”d, with the community standing as a steadfast anchor alongside the families, offering them moral support.

“These memorial spaces are necessary for families today,” noted Governor Kostiuk when summarizing the joint initiative, while expressing her gratitude for the Jewish community’s involvement. The memorial complex will serve as a source of comfort, and the community will continue to provide families with whatever assistance is required. This integration of spreading Torah, hiddur mitzvah, and social involvement proves that Jewish life in the region is currently thriving more than ever, marching confidently toward a year of growth and good tidings.
