The whole brouhaha over the NYPD accompanying Rama Duwaji, New York City’s first lady, turned out to be much ado about nothing, as NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that the NYPD would not be providing security for her trip and that the earlier statement by a City Hall official to the contrary was a misunderstanding.

The misunderstanding may have arisen from Duwaji’s request for the security detail.

The NYPD was quick to deny that it would send officers on Duwaji’s family trip to Syria and Lebanon, which are on the U.S. government’s “Do Not Travel” list, in September.

“The NYPD does not send officers to countries with level four travel advisories for discretionary reasons not linked to investigative work,” an NYPD spokesperson said. “This is not an investigative trip, and therefore, NYPD personnel will not be traveling there for it.”

Duwaji has come under fire for her antisemitic past, including posting online that Tel Aviv “shouldn’t exist in the first place” and extolling armed “freedom fighters of Palestine,” while praising a fighter from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Duwaji recently faced a furious backlash over her celebration of Oct. 7 and for an illustration included in a collection curated by Palestinian American author Susan Abulhawa. The Jew-hating writer said that Oct. 7 was “a spectacular moment that shocked the world” and on Wednesday posted that “Israelis and all zionists are parasitic filth.” Abulhawa was awarded a book deal from Simon & Schuster despite calling Jews demons, cockroaches, ghouls and sons of Satan.

Mamdani denounced Abulhawa’s words, saying they were “patently unacceptable,” but refused to call out his wife, saying she was a private person.
