A senior Iranian official said Wednesday that Tehran does not consider itself bound by a ceasefire with the United States, claiming Washington violated the agreement just 48 hours after it was reached.

“From our perspective, there is no ceasefire to extend because it never began,” the official told Reuters. “The U.S. violated the agreement 48 hours after we reached it and withdrew from it several days later.”

The official said discussions are continuing over a possible U.S. return to the memorandum of understanding reached between the sides, but acknowledged that there has been “no progress.” He stressed that the current negotiations are not focused on extending the ceasefire.

The comments come two days after President Donald Trump renewed his warnings to Tehran. Trump said Iran had demanded compensation for damage suffered during the war, but responded that the United States would also demand compensation from Iran for Americans and others harmed by the regime’s actions over the years.

Trump said he instructed U.S. representatives to raise the compensation issue in any future negotiations with Tehran.

Under the memorandum of understanding previously reached between the sides, the United States and regional partners committed to developing a reconstruction and economic development program for Iran worth at least $300 billion. A mechanism for implementing the plan was expected to be established within 60 days.

Iranian officials have also presented a sweeping list of demands for any broader agreement with Washington, including an end to U.S. military threats, an end to operations against Iran and its proxies, the lifting of the naval blockade, the withdrawal of American forces from the region, compensation for war damage, sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

The latest remarks underscore the deep divide between Washington and Tehran as diplomatic efforts continue with little indication that either side is prepared to accept the other’s key demands.
