A federal judge in Boston on Thursday dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit accusing Harvard University of failing to protect Jewish and Israeli students from harassment amid anti-Israel protests following the October 7 Hamas massacre and the subsequent war in Gaza.

U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns granted Harvard’s motion to throw out the case, which the administration filed in March. Stearns ruled that the government had not plausibly shown an ongoing violation of federal civil rights law on Harvard’s campus.

According to The New York Times, Stearns said the antisemitic incidents cited by the administration were “too isolated and episodic” to establish that Harvard was out of compliance with the law. The ruling deals a setback to the Trump administration’s efforts to pressure the university into a settlement.

The lawsuit was part of the administration’s broader effort to confront Harvard over its handling of antisemitism on campus.
