IDF surveillance soldiers stationed along the Gaza border are once again warning of suspicious terrorist activity inside the Strip, saying the situation feels eerily similar to the days leading up to the October 7 massacre—when their warnings went largely ignored.

According to a report by Channel 12, the soldiers have observed armed Hamas terrorists operating and planting explosives near the Yellow Line, the boundary separating areas under Israeli control from those controlled by Hamas.

“I feel just like on October 6,” one surveillance soldier said. “What’s the difference? That we’re identifying it on the Yellow Line and not on the fence. That’s the difference. We’re really seeing that they know we won’t fire on them. The Gazans aren’t idiots. In the end, they’re constantly testing us and seeing if we react or not. It’s just like before October 7.”

Another soldier described feeling “helpless” as she watches terrorist activity unfold with little response.

“We feel a little unnecessary. If I know that, in any case, they won’t do anything with my identification [of terror activity], what’s the point of my sitting eight hours a day and monitoring the area super-super-closely?” she said.

The report comes as Israel navigates a U.S.-backed effort aimed at securing Hamas’ disarmament. Israel recently paused airstrikes in Gaza for a week before resuming them, with reports indicating that strikes now require approval from the IDF Chief of Staff.

One surveillance soldier also expressed concern for Israeli troops stationed inside Gaza.

“In the end, the soldiers are stationed a few hundred meters from these terrorists,” she said. “We can’t just abandon them.”

The warnings echo the widely criticized failure to act on similar intelligence provided by surveillance soldiers before Hamas’ October 7 attack, in which approximately 1,200 people were murdered and hundreds taken hostage.
