There are moments in life that pierce through the ordinary, reminding us with absolute clarity that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is the Ba’al HaNissim. We can never take a single breath for granted.
On a recent, ordinary day in Los Angeles, our family lived through a miracle.
Young AY was swimming happily in a pool. His mother sat just feet away, keeping a watchful eye on the children. It was a normal summer scene—until the world stopped.
Suddenly, AY sank to the bottom.
His 12-year-old brother felt a chill of panic. Something was wrong. He turned to his mother, his voice tight: “AY went down and didn’t come back up.”
Without a second thought, the 12-year-old dove into the deep end. He had no way of knowing that the water had just transformed into a deadly trap. He didn’t know that a faulty underwater light had sent a quiet, invisible wave of electricity surging through the entire pool.
He only knew his brother was in trouble.
Pushing through the heavy water, he reached the bottom and found AY completely motionless. Fighting against time, he grabbed his little brother and hauled him to the surface.
As they broke the water, gasping for air, the older brother turned to his mother. He was shivering.
“I feel a tingling sensation,” he whispered.
Only later did we learn the terrifying truth: the pool was fully electrified.
The sheer weight of what happened is dizzying. When electricity hits a pool, it creates a silent hazard known as Electric Shock Drowning. It paralyzes muscles instantly. Normally, no one could have entered that water safely. But the 12-year-old didn’t hesitate. Driven by pure love and an incredible mesirus nefesh, he risked his own life to pull his brother from the depths.
B”H, both brothers survived this frightening ordeal.
Our hearts overflow with hakaras hatov to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. The fact that his brother looked over at the exact perfect second, realized the danger, and acted instantly was nothing short of absolute hashgacha pratis.
We are sharing this story because a miracle for our family should be a shield for yours.
If you own or use a swimming pool—especially one with underwater lighting—please do not wait. Have the entire electrical system inspected by a certified professional immediately.
Do not rely on the fact that your pool has worked fine for years. Electrical grounding, underwater fixtures, and safety switches can fail without warning. A pool can look clear, blue, and beautiful while hiding a fatal current.
This story could have ended in unspeakable tragedy. Instead, through a massive nes, two brothers are alive today.
We thank Hakadosh Baruch Hu with all our souls for His endless chesed, and for giving a 12-year-old boy the split-second courage to become a hero.
We share this not, chas v’shalom, to cause fear, but to inspire action.
Check your pool lights. Check your wiring. Protect your children.
Ultimately, we do our hishtadlus, but our lives rest safely in the hands of the Almighty. B”H, our story has a beautiful ending.
May we all be zocheh to hear only nissim, yeshuos, and besoros tovos.
A Los Angeles resident.
