Iran Planning Further Attacks on Gulf States if Fighting With U.S. Resumes, WSJ Reports
WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)-Iran is preparing additional escalatory attacks against Gulf states if hostilities with the United States resume, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing Iranian officials.
Options under consideration include sabotaging undersea internet cables in the Persian Gulf, stirring unrest among Shiite populations in Gulf countries and potentially launching ground operations against Kuwait, the Journal reported.
President Donald Trump signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran in mid-June that expired Sunday. U.S. administration officials had worked to build support for an agreement they hoped would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and begin winding down the conflict.
Iranian hard-line leaders, however, reached a different assessment, according to Iranian and Arab officials cited by the Journal. They viewed the understanding as a possible effort by the United States and Israel to relieve pressure on the global economy while buying time for a larger attack later.
Separately, the Journal reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sent commanders to Ansarallah, the Houthi movement in Yemen, ahead of its confrontation with Saudi Arabia. Intercepted communications reviewed by Arab intelligence officials showed the IRGC supervised the deployment of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles to launch sites near the Red Sea.
IRGC personnel also advised Ansarallah on potential targets and on measures to protect its officials from Saudi assassination strikes, the report said.
