New Jersey American Water (NJAW) crews are continuing door-to-door canvassing this week in two areas of Lakewood as part of the utility’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program.

According to NJAW contractor CDM Smith, crews are currently canvassing homes in Census Tract 7154.01, covering the West County Line area, and Census Tract 7158, covering the Oak Street and Chestnut Street area.

The program follows a 2021 New Jersey law requiring water providers to identify and replace lead and galvanized steel service lines by 2031.

Residents can submit photos of their water service pipes to NJAW or schedule a free in-person inspection, which typically takes approximately 15 minutes. Authorized canvassers may also visit designated properties. They will wear high-visibility vests displaying New Jersey American Water and CDM Smith logos and carry official identification. Canvassers will never request sensitive personal or financial information.

All inspections, canvassing and replacement work are conducted solely by NJAW or its authorized contractors, not Lakewood Township, although the effort is being coordinated with township officials for public awareness and safety.

NJAW says residents can continue using their water as usual and that the water continues to meet all state and federal water quality standards, including those for lead.
