Netanyahu, Board of Peace Agree: No IDF Redeployment From Gaza Until Hamas Fully Disarmed and Strip Demilitarized

Aug 17, 2026·2 min read

JERUSALEM (VINnews)-Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Board of Peace have agreed that the Israel Defense Forces will not redeploy from Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed and the entire strip is demilitarized, according to a Board of Peace official.

The discussions between Netanyahu and the board were “deep and constructive,” the official said. The agreement stipulates that the IDF will remain in place until every weapon — light and heavy — is collected and every tunnel is addressed. “Every weapon collected will be fully decommissioned so it cannot be used again,” the official said. “Israel retains its full right of self-defense: if Hamas resorts to terror, violence, or attempts to rearm, Israel will retain the right to act accordingly.”

The Board of Peace informed Netanyahu that Hamas has committed to fully disarm and immediately cease all military activity in Gaza, including rearmament and tunnel digging, the official said.

Netanyahu affirmed that Israel will honor its outstanding past commitments that helped the United States secure the release of all hostages — the living and the bodies of the dead, according to the official.

To ensure close collaboration, the parties agreed to immediately establish two joint working groups. One will focus on security and the demilitarization of Gaza, which both Israel and the Board of Peace are determined shall be complete and prompt. The second will address basic needs, sanitation, clean water and other public health issues for the people of Gaza.

A Board of Peace official said the IDF will remain in Gaza until Hamas surrenders its entire arsenal and Gaza’s tunnel network is fully dismantled.

In a separate interview with Israel’s Channel 12, Nickolay Mladenov said decommissioning Hamas’ tunnel network could take as long as 10 years.
